The Mall at Rockingham Park is located in Salem, New Hampshire. It is the largest shopping mall in New Hampshire, as well as northern New England, with 1,250,000 square feet (116,000 m2) of floor space. The mall is adjacent to the Rockingham Park race track in Salem, and was the state's third shopping mall to be built. The mall now hosts 140 stores, with anchors that include Macy's, JCPenney, Sears, and Lord & Taylor (opening spring 2012).
In 2006, the mall's original Macy's store was closed, with Macy's moving into the location formerly occupied by Filene's (which opened with the mall in 1991 with 140,000 square feet (13,006 m2), expanding to 168,000 sq ft (15,608 m2) in 1998). The 159,000-square-foot (14,800 m2) store previously occupied by Macy's was originally opened as Jordan Marsh in 1994. Lord & Taylor's first location in New Hampshire will open in the space spring 2012.
Like the Pheasant Lane Mall in Nashua, the Mall at Rockingham Park is located close to the Massachusetts border in order to attract residents of that state. New Hampshire has no sales tax on most goods. The success of the Mall at Rockingham Park, which opened in August 1991, caused the Methuen Mall across the line in Methuen, Massachusetts, to close in 1997, and be replaced with a "big box" center. It also caused the adjacent (and older) Rockingham Mall to convert into a "big box" center as well, as Salem could no longer support two shopping malls.
The mall is managed and owned by Simon Property Group.
